Today we’d like to honor SebARTS Volunteer of the Month: Bill Theis

For anyone that has spent time at SebARTS over the years, you very well have met Bill Theis. He was unanimously elected for our January volunteer spotlight as he literally helps with everything and works with everyone. He has been volunteering for SebARTS since 2012. He is also an artist who specializes in Fine Art Photography.

Bill grew up on a farm in Texas. He graduated after achieving several post doctorate degrees, and was stationed in Ohio with the United States Air Force as his first assignment after graduation. He completed his service with the USAF after four years, and went on to become a contractor and then a civil servant for the US Department of Defense. He later transferred to the Navy at its largest land-base naval air warfare station in China Lake, CA before retiring in Cotati, CA in 2011.

“I finally can devote time to my art and volunteer. Experiencing Art at the Source as a visitor made me want to move here!”

When asked about the activities he has done to support SebARTS, his list was long. It included docent for the gallery, member of the visual arts team, Art Trails Steering Committee and Art at the Source Steering Committee, as well as editor for artist entry forms, helping to build and maintain SebART’S email list and Calls for Entry for upcoming gallery exhibitions and instructing workshops. Bill has also assisted in fairs and special events, most recently at the Northstar Gala.

When asked what volunteering activity he enjoyed the most, he said, “Meeting the people as a docent was rewarding, plus I learned a lot about other art forms since I had to represent the artist in the gallery no matter what type of art it was!”

When asked to recall a favorite memory of a time that he had at SebARTS, he answered, “Long before I retired, I had visited the gallery and left to take some photos of spiderwebs on the fence outside. Linda Galletta, who I did not know, approached me and, seeing I was a photographer, invited me to submit art—this pretty much made my mind up to move to Sonoma!”

What is something about him that would surprise people? “I have a PhD in solid state physics from the University of Texas at Austin”
