The cameras that I have used over the years for these images include:
My very first camera when I was not even a teenager was a brownie box. I next graduated to a Montgomery Ward rangefinder. That was so much fun, that I immediately made the jump to a Crown Graphic and its larger format size. Since my world was pretty much confined to the family farm, I soon began photographing abstracts of the farm implements. I also got one of those new, very popular 1961 Pentax Spotmatic cameras which I eventually upgraded to a Hasselblad CM and a Rollei twinlens. A Graflex XL replaced the Crown Graphic, and I documented so many weddings and other commercial photography requests that I actually paid for my entire college expenses with a camera! Currently none of the images on this website are from that period, so those cameras are not shown although I am working on printing some of those ancient images.
Photography became serious in 1977 when I purchased my first 4″x5″ Calumet view camera! Over the years other 4×5 I owned were a Tachihara, a Zone VI, and eventually, an Arca Swiss. Early on I had a Kodak Masterview 8″x10″ that made fantastic images, but was a true pain to carry. In 2010 being concerned that film was on its way to extinction, I finally went digital with a Betterlight scanning back for the 4×5 camera–not your ordinary digital, to say the least! . But then as now, I approach digital exactly like I did for film. Study, compose, set the camera, take a single shot, which is all that is ever needed unless there are wind or waves. In 2013, this set-up gave way to a Phase One P65+ capture back that I would use by taking 4 shots using the 4×5 camera and then stitch making some of the highest resolution digital images together, back when digital cameras were only 5 megapixel. The Phase One came with a 645DF+ Mamiya camera body which was replaced by the Phase One XF when I upgraded the back to an 80 megapixel IQ180. It is my primary camera now, although I do enjoy taking infrared photos that I shoot with a modified Sony A7R2 camera and a Sigma DP2M. Although these two are my lowest resolution cameras, images can be printed with great detail up to about 30″x40″. With all my other cameras, you would have to have it printed many feet in size before you will see any grain or poor image quality. Maybe you would want an entire wall covered with one of my shots? Only large format cameras are capable of very large enlargements. Plus I have added a “mini view camera”, the Cambo Actus that I use with a Sony A7R body: I just couldn’t stay away from view cameras!
